Osteopathic treatment is suitable for most people and all ages, and can help alleviate a range of conditions, not just back problems!!
Osteopaths employ a variety of treatment methods including soft tissue massage, stretching, joint articulation as well as manipulation.
What to expect at your first appointment
During your first appointment I will take details of your current complaint and medical history, as well as information about your general health and lifestyle.
Following the case history I will carry out a physical examination, for which you will normally be required to dress down to your underwear (though you are welcome to wear shorts and/or a vest if you prefer). The physical exam allows me to assess your muscle tone, posture and range of movement, and may include relevant orthopaedic tests. If necessary further medical tests may be carried out, such as taking your blood pressure or checking your reflexes.
It is important to realise that an osteopath will not only deal with the pain and discomfort that you as a patient present with, but that they will also consider your symptoms in the context of a patients' full medical history as well as their lifestyle and personal circumstances.
This approach ensures that treatment is tailored to the individual patient. In additon the treatment may be backed up by health advice and rehabilitation exercises where appropriate.
Follow up treatments are usually shorter than the initial consultation, and involve a short verbal assessment and physical exam to assess progress prior to treatment.
